love the series, the writing is great. Often, you can read a good book and take the writing for granted until you pick one that is not as well written. This author does an excellent job of writing. I was into the book, eager to find out what happens without being distracted by stilted writing. Of course when I finish a good book like this I am a little sad that is is over. Thankfully there is one more in the series!

Command Decision Vatta War Book 4 Elizabeth Moon 9780345491596 Books Reviews

I am reading this series at more than a book a day. This is a new twist on how the military might work in human expansion into the galaxy. I recommend this series without reservation.
The book concludes the fact-paced military sci-fi introductory tale of Kylara Vatta. The author left significant opportunity for sequels (catch the bad guy!). The military details are well done and "believable". Kylara and Rafe Dunbarger, respectively, become the space admiral and Interstellar Communications CEO that they have been moving toward in the series. Inevitably, they submit to the attraction that has been growing throughout the series/

I give it four stars because it's a great story with good characters. I didn't give it the fifth star because it's only a good story. There are no serious flaws in or issues with the main characters to be addressed or worked around. The premise is simple, but enjoyable.
In the same vein as "Sporting Chance, "Hunting Party", and "Winning Colors", Elizabeth Moon has created an inspiring space drama in her Vatta's War series with likeable lead character Captain Kylara Vatta, her cousin Stella, and Rafe Dunbarger, the mysterious ISC spy.
"Command Decision" continues the story of the remnants of the Vatta family, striving to find Trade and Profit out of the chaos that ensued after their families were targets of mysterious pirates. Kylara, Stella, and Rafe split off into their own intriguing stories in this, the fourth book in the series.
Rafe follows his own trail back to his home planet to find that all is not as copacetic as he had thought. Shaken by what he finds, he susses out the problems with the help of some old aquaintances, only to find that in order to correct the problems, he'd have to change who he is.
Meanwhile, Stella has set up shop on super-polite Cascadia and struggles to find balance as the new CEO of Vatta, all the while dealing with rambunctious teenager Toby and his technological genius.
And of course, Captain Kylara Vatta has gone in search of the pirates that are behind the murder and mayhem scattered across the galaxy. She's not alone, but continues to find herself in hairy predicaments.
I was a bit amazed at who ended up being the Slotter Key Spaceforce advisor on the other Slotter Key privateer's ship, and a little disappointed that it wasn't who I thought it was.
One of my favorite characters from "Engaging the Enemy" didn't get near enough page-time (Aunt Gracie Lane Vatta ROCKS!) in this fourth book. Of course, as always with the fantastic and enthralling writing of Elizabeth Moon, the story ended too soon (300 more pages, please!)
Ky Vatta is a great character, and keeping up with her exciting exploits in the Vatta's War series was a lot of fun for me, but the thing that sets Elizabeth Moon's books apart is the strength of her "secondary" characters. They just aren't all that secondary! As the story shifts focus back and forth between Ky, her cousin, her aunt, and the mysterious Rafe, I was every bit as concerned about what was going on with all of them. Weaving all these story threads together is what drew me to writers like Moon. Not many authors have the gift of it...
Command Decision (Vatta's War Series) is a ripping good yarn. The story is nicely paced with many realistic touches that deal with the trails of trying to sustain both military and business operations. I would recommend this book to any avid science fiction reader and especially those that are space opera fans.

However, I do have three small criticisms of this book. First, the book is not as much a stand alone work as Ms. Moon's previous works in this series; you should read the previous works to fully appreciate this book. Second, I felt it the ending was a bit contrived and hurried in its development - although I found the ending very enjoyable. Third and foremost, I felt that Ms. Moon has far too many characters that each deserve their own separate stories rather than rolled up into one book.

Again this is a very entertaining story, that is part of a very addictive series, and is a top notch read.
If you like books based on the writing style of Cavell or Mitchner, then you’re going to like Moon. This is my third time I’ve read this series & I have yet to find a dangling plot thread. Her descriptions of characters are realistic, plots believable, & flow of action credible. I can strongly recommend this book series.
This story is the adventure of surviving attacks at the same time solving the logistics of maintaining a small force, while building a larger one. As usual there is no dead space with this Author nor mindless action, it all ties together in a very believable drama that can not be put down. Then again there is the separate story of Rafe and the trouble with ISC communications and how that affects the conflict. A very good read - enjoy.
